It's easy to see the dark side. All you have to do is close your eyes.

  1. The dark side is part of us and we can't deny that fact. And then there's the opposite force, the bright side. It's our choice where we want to be or what we want to see.

  2. Hi NP,
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. When I read your aphorism this quote (author unknown) popped into my mind so I'm sharing it. “To be a star, you must shine your own light, follow your own path, and don't worry about the darkness, for that is when the stars shine brightest.”

  5. I LOVE this one! So very true. Yes there can be dark times ahead but things are only fully dark if we close of the possibility of a bright side.
    :)

    Enjoy your weekend!

  7. I am not searching for hidden meanings here (although I think it is without fail a play on words...) sometimes we just need to black everything out for a little!

  8. And some still refuse to embrace the dark as part of who we are, even when they see it.

  9. Sometimes when I close my eyes, I see little movie clips, mostly in black and white, but last night I saw a video camera scanning a child's bedroom with lots of brightly colored playthings, and a beautiful crocheted blanket.

Then I saw the dark side.

  10. It amazes me how many people walk around our world with their eyes closed and see nothing but darkness, glass half empty, or the sky is falling. It hurts to see the pain they experience for no good reason.

Yes there is dark times in our lives but with eyes open you can escape them at the earliest possible moment.

Excellent post.. Thanks for making me think and meditate each day..

  11. Only something is missing here...yesterday's aphorism.

  12. It's true. Very true. It's easy to see the light too, just open your eyes :)

  13. Darkness and light reside in each of us--we just have to choose whether to keep our eyes open or leave them shut.

  14. We are complex beings. Sometimes closing our eyes takes us away from the dark side.

  15. I don't know, really... do you have Nietzsche in mind here? I guess I'm thinking about the abyss when I read this...

And on a different note,I can see a lot of possible interps here. For one, perhaps the "darkness" comes from the withdrawal into the self or the denial of anything outside the self. That refusal to consider the presence of an other or collapse into solipsism could certainly lead to a "dark side."

Another thing is to consider whether or not having that "dark side" in the self is actually a bad thing, or rather, something that must be recognized and embraced in order to keep its destructive power in check.

Or, if you think from the side of complementarity, you may actually need a light and a dark side, an inner and an outer life, perhaps. Those things which rely on the senses to see-- community, alterity, morality-- are the "bright" side, not because they are better, but because they require the outer eyes. The "dark" side would be our inner scrutiny, our imagination and reason, because no light needs to illuminate them for them to be appreciated...

In short, this one's got layers. I love it.
