Then we ought to find a way to make us more content in ourselves. Epicureus (spelt wrong) said, for a man to fill fulfilled, all he need do is prune his desires, in words to that effect.
True... And that thing can be so many different things. I think true happiness comes when we learn that it doesn't really come from "things". Thanks for the words of wisdom.

Sometimes, that "thing" is a pre-conceived notion of what happiness is or should be.
ReplyDeleteSpot on.
ReplyDeleteso true! yet people won't give it up.
ReplyDeleteGood one, Marty. It really makes you think.
ReplyDeleteVery true, NP -- the balance of attachment and detachment. So nice to read your aphorisms here after a while :)
ReplyDeleteNice one Marty,
ReplyDeleteThe only thing worse than having your crutch fall from underneath you is being that crutch.
I see this as a two way thing, as people do use things as a crutch.
ReplyDeleteBUT, the things I need for happiness, I really do need! Like life, air, food....
I think we need to focus on being interested rather than happy.
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting.
ReplyDeleteActually at first I wasn't sure if I should agree, but after having thought about it some more, I totally agree!
It's that word, need. It makes us vulnerable to loss and therefore sucks the happiness right out.
ReplyDeleteSo very true whether the "thing" is an object, a person or, as Helena mentioned, a pre-conceived idea.
ReplyDeleteTrue... And that thing can be so many different things. I think true happiness comes when we learn that it doesn't really come from "things". Thanks for the words of wisdom.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it is better to remain miserable and remove all doubt...
ReplyDeleteSo true, Marty! True happiness only comes from within; it does not come from outside of ourselves so no need to pursue it.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Totally agreed!
ReplyDeleteFunny! so let's get rid of desire, a la Buddha! I am content this minute to scan my reader.
