Great aphorism. I am totally grooving on it. Considering the violet is a slippery slope, which often leaves our poor little flower bereft of its primal splendor and magnificence. Something is always lost in translation.
agree. faith doesn't need proof. our idea create "reality" in many "strange" ways. however, something that can be traced by our 5 senses do exist independently (if we really trust our 5 senses).
Some things do not have to be seen to be believed. But do they really exist? Or do we believe in something that we convinced ourselves existed? Maybe the violets are there, but we cannot identify them with any of our human senses. We need what is beyond that. Can we see trust, bravery, love? Then how do we know they exist? Seeing is believing?
This is such a good reminder to see through words.
In Buddhism, Buddha had passed on Zen tradition to one of 10 disciples. "What is Zen?" Buddha asked. Everyone had a way to explain what Heart was and no one was right.
Until one disciple walked to Buddha and picked up a lotus and then put it down on the ground, Buddha smiled.
Ah - the old 'is it that my perception of reality is true, or is it the reality itself' ploy... There are some remarkable affinities in your words to the way in which faith can play a role in our reality and perception thereof. Many layers of truth here ready to be unpacked for those willing to take the time to cut the strings!
Kind of like some of us can smell them there and don't need to see them as the smell alone has a power of "presence" as they are there. To others though ....if they cant see them they very well refuse to even believe they even exist simply because they don't see them so they don't even think of taking a deep breath to possibly be able to feel them.
Very nice, Marty! Yes, what exists will exist whether you believe it does or not. So true. I like that you used the image of the violet, a pretty and delicate flower.
This reminds me of a quote from Shakespeare's Hamlet:
ReplyDelete"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Nice one NP.
ReplyDeleteIt made me think..
A belief in leprechaun isn't necessary for leprechauns to be there.
Good post and thought provoking as a belief in anything doesn't mean it is really there. Got me thinking again NP.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this one. Very thought provoking.

ReplyDeleteI guess believing something exists doesn't believe they should be there or not be there. Is that what you're trying to say?

ReplyDeleteYes... but, of necessity, they would have to be somewhere, if only it were elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteRight
ReplyDeletebasically
If you wouldn't notice them they wouldn't exist.

ReplyDeleteJames, beat me it what I was going to say. Our property in covered with wild violets and they bring joy whether they are blooming or not.
ReplyDeleteVery true and objective. Reality IS, and our beliefs come and go.
ReplyDeleteMarty,
ReplyDeleteExcellent to muse on. Belief is all well and good, but the facts are the facts and the proof is or is not the proof.
