Future developments can't mar our happiness now.

  1. I was going to offer to add some color with my photographs but your minimalist Zen space works.

  3. Yes, yes, yes, in theory...but sometimes so difficult in daily routine! On the other hand, why we have the (bad) habit of suffering in advance???

  5. Is this like "Live for the Moment?" Because if it is, I just heard a very bad story about someone who did just that, and for years tried to persuade his wife, the primary breadwinner, to do the same. She wouldn't, so he left her. Now she's richer, and he thinks he's going to get spousal support so he can continue his lifestyle. NOT!

  6. @Vania: "Why we have the bad habit of suffering in advance?" A wonderful question to ask yourself. Hopefully, this aphorism offers some clue.
@Judie: "Live for the moment" is one possible interpretation. But to me, the aphorism says much, much more.

  7. Yes, it does say a lot more. One of our daughters went into panic mode during the bad drop in the stock market. She called and asked what to do, because she was checking the market every hour. We told her to lighten up, because eventually it would self-correct. We also told her she shouldn't be worrying about something over which she had no control. Just go about your daily routine and ride it out. This is a lot more positive an interpretation, and the one people should live by.

  8. @Judie: yes, that's closer to what I had in mind. By the way, if you get a chance, check my other blog "Out of Context." It's my original blog containing lots more of my aphorisms. Thanks again for commenting.

  9. I'd say "shouldn't" rather than "can't"...then, I guess it's not really the future developments, but our imaginings of them that screw most of us up so much...

  10. Yes, NP.

The past is dead and the future does not exist, so live in the present.

We tend to let the burdens of yesterday and the anxieties of tomorrow affect our mood in the present - but as you wisely point out, we have the power to be happy in the now and forget about the debilitating psychological time that we choose to create.

  11. Yes, I know that I have to ask myself...and I know that I am the only person who has the answer.
