Behind The Mask

A mask can hide you from others, but not from yourself.

  1. I like that. However, it can deceive others AND deceive yourself...

  2. Self knowledge can itself provide a mask.

  3. Why hide your true self from everyone! Just be!

  5. I think if one cannot hide things from his/herself, he/she would not be able to hide them from others either, they would leak out in one way or another.

  6. You forgot to mention that a close-fitting, airtight mask with no holes for your mouth and/or nose can suffocate you.

That's not intended to have any deep, hidden philosophical meaning. It's just a public service announcement. I wouldn't want you to get sued if someone tried to test out this aphorism at home.

  7. Hi,
Yes Marty, that's true........but only for so long..

  8. Exactly, you might be able to hide behind that mask for others... but you will always know yourself...

  9. Yes Marty, its true for external mask people put to hide their face from others.

  10. To some extent, our 'social' masks, the ones that ensure we shower and shave and attempt politeness, are a form of safe boundaries - it would be awful if we each spewed our dirtiest laundry willy-nilly. BUT - it is very freeing to let those layers go and just be real. A world in which we all were safe enough to be genuine would be lovely indeed. Sign me up!

    1. I agree with you there Melody. Even though a society where no social masks are required would be amazing. Knowing that we all have our own social mask put on, for me, is a sign of protection.

  11. We wear so many masks in our lives, yet behind the mask is a mask all its own.

  13. There is a point where the man and mask become indistinguishable from each other to the extent that breaking one will destroy the other.

  14. Marty, if I read this a few hours ago, I would say that it is true. But after seeing Ariel Castro's "apology" on the news, I would say the inner-reveal is true for most of us, but not for all. His self-denial was stunning. Or perhaps some reveals just take longer. Thankfully he has a lifetime plus 1,000 years of de-masking time ahead of him.

  15. I agree with your aphorism, Marty. We can't hide from ourselves.

  16. I think there are mask people are conscious of, but under those there are ones that they do not know they are wearing.

I do not believe anyone truly knows themselves.

    1. I think you are right PBScott. For the most part, anyway, few people truly know who they are or why they are.

  17. If I'm hiding anything from myself and find out about it I'm going to be very upset. ;)

  18. Sometimes it is indeed easier to fool oneself than others.

  19. Truly wise words! Just be one in front of others and in front of ourselves.

  20. So true. You can wear a mask and hide your true self from others, but you cannot hide your true self from your own self.
