Peeling The Orange

I learned long ago to peel an orange rather than wait for it to happen.

  1. Nice Aphorism.

I usually try and peel oranges with my mind. I have not been successful, but have found that if I try really hard for several days, I can make it all fluffy like a peach, but grey. The mind is truly a powerful thing.

  2. If you don't make a move, it's never going to happen. Thanks NP that's given the kick I need to get on to updating my CV.

  3. I like to peel them so that they stay in their original shape. Then I can have a little orange-peel shell sitting on my plate. That way, it's done the way I want. :)

  4. Good point! You can't wait too long to peel them, either, lest they rot. Why wait if you can do something today?

  5. Taking the initiative to help one's self in life is often difficult. For me it is far easier to help others. This is really a good one, Marty.

  6. Hi Marty,
I think your apgorism may reflect a life lesson I have learned. Don't wait for someone else to lead the way for you or act on your behald. A leader may never materialize and even if one arrives it may be too late. Don't try to be a leader when one is not required, but don't try to avoid the responsibility of being a leader when you see the position vacant and leadership is required.

  9. Good one, NP :) It's important to be proactive but not reactive, in thinking as well as actions.

  10. Awesome way to say it..

I use to tell my kids if they couldn't peel their own oranges then that meant they weren't suppose to have it.. it was surprising how quickly they peeled their own oranges.

  11. To get a sound out of an orange, don't hit it, squeeze it, and make it cry uncle.

  12. What is this kinky thing about oranges, is it a lemmon entry?

  13. Being proactive is the only way to live life. I learned long ago never to "assume" anything. You're usually wrong. If your unsure about anything, ask a question before proceeding. Better to jump in with both feet rather than wait and be embarassed later.

  15. I love the way you keep reminding us of the simple truths. Too many people want to complicate things.

  17. Someone should invent an orange-peeling device... ;)

but seriously, this aphorism defines one of life's greatest lessons: don't wait for someone else to live your life for you. Live it while you're here and own it; take charge. It's one I am constantly re-learning.

  19. Great! One thing is to be patient... and another very different one is to have passive attitude as if you had nothing to do with your world or life...
Let's live our lives to their full potential!

  20. This is so very true, Marty. Instead of waiting things to happen, it's best to do something about it!

  21. Love this- thanks np. I have definitely spent a lot of time sitting around waiting for the orange to peel on its own...and this aphorism makes me laugh at myself and get off my arse :)

  22. Nice! We are much better at predicting when we can control the causation. May I use this aphorism on my site Aphoristic Cocktails, please?
