Surviving Ourselves

We are the mountains we must cross.

  1. But what is beyond the mountain, Marty?

  2. When I was twenty I had a nightmare about mountain climbing. Twin gnomes stopped to point out an easier path to the top. Then they fell down and rolled away, laughing. (I invariably choose the difficult way.) Mountain climbing is exhausting and terrifying. Reaching the top feels like an achievement. The reward is a new and glorious perspective. So it's no leap to say, every mountain is part of me.

  3. True, but one thing for sure, those who claim that they have crossed never saw the mountain.

  4. Life is a journey, to be sure!

  5. The journey is more exciting to me than getting there. An adventuresome spirit is what's helped me survive the mountain of me.

  6. Is there room in this for exterior forces? For example, it seems a child born into extreme poverty has an obstacle outside herself. Or child taken into slavery.

Thanks you for keeping me thinking and on my toes. Any thoughts on Robin Williams tied up in this aphorism? Electric and chemical fluxes in the brain can create involuntary mountains, can't they?

I agree most mountains are of ourselves made.

    1. Reading over the entries, I think I interpreted the mountains different. I see them as obstacles, trials, and suffering - Tolstoy-like.

  7. The most difficult is to understand what we really want from life. Other words finding our purpose in life is like climbing the mountain, when you finally find it you are free :)

  8. Our only purpose is to live and let live and if we are on the mark we know that amounts to slaying our egos before passing on. We all have an inner landscape we need to pay very close attention to. There are many mountains to climb, valleys to cross, and rivers to ford - all of them are ego.

  9. There is nothing wrong in ego, we al have it and it is impossible to get rid of it completely before we die. As long as we are conscious about it we won't let ego to control our lives. In our physical form we can find something we are good at and what makes us happy, this is life. I call it purpose or a dream but of course I know it is just another form of ego, agree. :)
